A jury yesterday cleared a community worker on charges of attacking Rastafarian Mr Kuomba Balogun with a machete.
Earlier, Mr Balogun, aged 26, was fined Pounds 150 by the judge at Bristol crown court for turning up late on the second day of the trial.
Mr Justice Smithies told his counsel, Mr Ian Glenn: 'A fine would be a proper way of expressing public disapproval.'
The judge also ordered Mr Balogun to pay Pounds 100 towards his defence costs but Mr Glenn said that he did not intend to claim them.
The jury found Mr Valentine Walker, aged 36, of Robertson Road, Easton, Bristol, not guilty of unlawfully wounding Mr Balogun with intent. An alternative charge of unlawful wounding was also dismissed.
The prosecution claimed that Mr Walker, former vice-chairman of the St Paul's Community Association, of which Mr Balogun is chairman had struck a 2ft 6in machete into Mr Bologun's neck. Mr Mark Horton, prosecuting, said the blow came within one centimetre of severing his juglar vein.
The court was told that Mr Balogun did not initially report the incident to the police and discharged himself from Bristol Royal Infirmary after treatment.
In his address to the jury, Mr Nicholas O'Brien, the defence counsel said: 'Mr Balogun is an evil man who does not share society's standards or values.'
Mr Walker did not appear during the two-day hearing and the judge said that an arrest warrant still stood but was now with bail so that he would not have to be immediately arrested when found.

1986 - This was the week in September 1986 when Bristol was beginning to feel the backlash from Operation Delivery, in which 600 men from the Avon and Somerset police force had gone into St Paul’s to make a series of arrests for drug offences. This had led to an outbreak of stone throwing, cars set on fire, a smash and grad raid on a local store and a mugging.
To make matters worse the Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Popperwell was taken off to hospital after a suspected heart attack. And Tom Turvey, the police authority chairman, was asked to stand down after objecting to a Labour party statement about the police raid. He said that there were differences between his view of the events in St Paul’s and those contained in the statement which demanded a full, independent public inquiry into Operation Delivery. There were angry scenes at a Police Liaison Committee over the fact that the police did not consult community leaders before the raid and that it had been provocative and heavy handed. And Avon County councillor Roger Berry described the extent and duration of the raid as "totally unacceptable." It was an unhappy day for the police who were, this very week, staging a parade on College Green to celebrate 150 years of city policing. Some 45 retired police officers joined 140 police officers for the event which was attended by Bristol’s Lord Mayor, Joan Jones and the Lord Lieutenant of Avon, Sir John Wills.

A blow with a machete struck St Pauls community leader Kuomba Balogun just one centimetre from his jugular vein, a Bristol Crown Court jury has been told.
Mr Balogun suffered a burst ear drum in the attack it was alleged – an injury that still affects his hearing.
Valentine Walker, aged 36, of Robertson Road, Eastville, Bristol, denies wounding Mr Balogun, and causing him grievous bodly harm.
Mr Mark Horton, prosecuting, said that the two men used to be colleagues in the St Pauls community association, Mr Balogun as its chairman and Walker as its vice-chairman.
"During that relationship they fell out," said Mr Horton. "The reason why they fell out has beenspoken of by neither of these men."
He said the men had not spoken to each other until the day of the alleged attack, when Walker went to see Mr Balogun as he worked alone in the offices of the St Pauls Local Development Agency in Grosvenor Road.
"At first it was a normal conversation, but this defendent became more and more angry," said Mr Horton.
"He went away and returned with arusty looking machete, some two-and-a –half feet long."
He said that in the attack that followed, Mr Balogun suffered two cuts to his neck and one to his hand.
"Throughout this, Mr Balogun was saying: 'What have I done, what have I done to you?'" said Mr Horton. "The defendent said: 'I'll kill you boy!' and then he left."
He added that Mr Balogun's most serious wound was sevencentimetres long and severed a muscle. It was just one centimetre from his jugular vein.

The doctor who examined a neck wound suffered by St Paul's community leader Kuomba Balogun told Bristol Crown court that it could have been self=inflicted.
But MrBalogun told ajury yesterday that he suffered the wound in amachete attack in his office in St. Paul's.
And he alleged that Valentine Walker, who is accused of the attack, was in collaboration with the police.
Walker, aged 36,of Robertson Road, Eastville, Bristol, denies wounding Mr. Balogun and causing him grievous bodily harm.
His barrister, Mr Nicholas O'Brien, asked Dr Rupert Pullen, who treated Mr Balogun at the Bristol Royal Infirmiry, if a seven centimetre cut to his neck and a cut on his hand cpould have been self-inflicted.
He replied: "All I had in front of me was a wound. But I am not able to speculate. They could have been, yes."
MrBalogun said that the attack happened when Walkervisited him in the offices of the St. Paul's Local Development Agency in Grosvenor Road on November 5 last year.
The two men had known each other for many years and once headed the St. Paul's community association, Mr Balogun as its chairmanand Mr Walker as its vice-chairman.
But Mr Balogun said that by November 5last year their relationship was "non-existent".
He said the two men had a heated conversation and Walker then left the office, returning later with the machete.
"He swung the blade and it hit me on the side of the face and cut my fingers," said Mr Balogun.
"Then he struck meon the throat and blood just spurted out."
He said he also suffered a burst eardrum which has affected his hearing and on which he is going to have an operation.
Under cross-examination by Mr O'Brien, Mr Balogun denied that he was lying when he said Walker was responsible for the attack and also denied thast he was wrong not to tell the police the name of his attacker until eight days after the attack.
"I wasn't in any fit state to give any evidence straight away," he said.
He said the attack happened at a timewhen MPs were calling for him to be sacked from the LDA.
"I also suspected that Valentine Walker may be working in close collaberation with the police and I was in fear that other attacks may be carried out against community representatives," he said.

Walker is not guilty of attack

Valentine Walker was today cleared of attacking St. Paul's community leader Kuomba Balogun with a machete.
A jury at Bristol Crown court took two hours and 20 minutes to decide that walker, 36, of Robertson Road, Eastville, was not guilty of attacking Mr Balogun as he worked in his office in Grosvenor Road, St. Paul's.
Walker had denied wounding and causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Balogun.
And Balogun was brought before Judge Kenneth Smithies and fined £150 for being in contempt of court for failing to appear on Wednesday to give evidence.
In a four-day trial, interrupted by frequent failures of key individuals to attend, Walker was not in court to hear the verdict.

Praised
Walker, who used to head the St Paul's community association with Balogun, disappeared after leaving court on bail on Wednesday. The bail remains in force.
Judge Smithies praised the manner in which the chief officer in the case, Detective Constable Ian Johnson, handled the investigation.
He said he behaved in an exemplary fashion for the "tact and restraint with which he carried out his duties."
The judge had directed the jury that they consider a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, or an alternative of unlawful wounding. They brought back not guilty verdicts on both.
When Mr Balogun appeared in the witness box on Wednesday afternoon, he at first refused to answer questions from the prosecution, saying it was "in the interests of the black community" if the case did not proceed any further.
But after being warned that he was in contempt of court, he went into the box and said that Walker had attacked him as he worked alone in the offices of the Local Development Agency in St. Paul's.
He said he suffered a seven-centimetre wound to his neck, a burst ear drum and cuts to his hand.
Before sending the jury out, Judge Smithies said that the real point in question was whether Mr Balogun had correctly identified his attacker.
He said it seemed unlikely that the wounds were self-inflicted.
Walker had not given any evidence to the jury when he disappeared.
Balogun was told to pay the contempt fine at £2.50 a week. He faces 20 days in jail if he does not make the payments.
He claimed, through barrister Mr Ian Glen, that he had been unable to attend for personal domestic reasons which could not be revealed in open court.
Summing up for the defence yesterday, barrister Mr Nicholas O'Brien said the case against Mr Walker rested on Mr Balogun's evidence.
"At the end of the day I say you could not hang a dog on Mr Balogun's evidence," said Mr O'Brien.
"Mr Balogun is an evil man who could not be trusted, a man who doesn't share society's standards or values."
Mr Balogun might just have decided to give Walker's name to the police because it was politically convenient and because he believed Walker was a "collaborator", Mr O'Brien added.
Walker had been "foolish" not to appear but the jury should not take it as an admission of guilt.
"Walker may equally have gone off in fear of wrongful conviction or punishment," he said.
For the prosecution, Mr Mark Horton apologised to the jury for spending more time waiting in a back room than hearing the case.
