Why did Wembley Stadium need replacing?

The old Stadium was a grand old art deco monument, you could see the twin towers for miles on the north circular in NW London, it had a lovely playing surface and did the job housing 80K seated to watch spectator sport...and they replaced it with a wildly over budget and wildly late, glass and concrete edifice..with a handle/arch (so you can pick it up?) and a puddingy pitch that never dries out. It cost me £35 to watch a conference league play off final last year FFS! God knows what the FA are charging for cup semi-final tickets this weekend! fans are having to pay for their folly!
(hope this topic interests someone else, I was going to write about 'the red rubber bands all over the place 'mystery being solved, they are ,apparently, post office issue dropped by posties!)

Well, I imagine a whacking great contract was signed and quite a bit of dosh changed hands.
The awkward bit would have been getting round the old stadium's listed status.



May have simply been an excuse to suck up loads of public money and re-jig so as to make sure the owners get more control.
