The truth never dies: Megrahi demands Lockerbie inquiry
http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/home-news/the-truth-never-dies-megr ahi-demands-lockerbie-inquiry-1.825143#

EXCLUSIVE: Ian Ferguson and Lucy Adams in Tripoli

Published on 28 Aug 2009

The man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing has backed demands for a far-reaching public inquiry into the atrocity, saying the international community owes that to the families of the 270 victims.

In his first full-length interview since being released last week, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi told The Herald: “We all want to know the truth. The truth never dies.”

Speaking from a hospital bed at his home in Tripoli, Megrahi talked extensively about his 10-year battle with the Scottish legal system and insisted he did not commit the worst terrorist act on mainland Britain.

The revelation comes in the wake of The Herald’s exclusive interview with the son of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

Saif al Islam al Gaddafi claimed the proposed prisoner transfer deal with Britain had targeted Megrahi and was linked to talks on trade and oil, but that his release on compassionate grounds was completed unrelated to commerce.

Megrahi, who has terminal prostate cancer, revealed he dropped his appeal against the conviction because he would not live to see its outcome and was desperate to return to his family. “It is all about my family,” he said. “People have said there was pressure from the Libyan authorities or Scottish authorities, but it wasn’t anything like this.”

Instead, he put his faith in an appeal for compassion and said he was impressed by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill during their meeting at Greenock Prison. “I thought he was a very decent man and he gave me a chance to say what I wanted and to express myself. He gave me the chance to make a presentation to him and he was very polite.”

Megrahi is still determined to clear his name, partly through an autobiography, and also backs a public inquiry. Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the tragedy, has already called for such an investigation, but the UK Government seems firmly opposed.

“I support the issue of a public inquiry if it can be agreed. In my view, it is unfair to the victim’s families that this has not been heard. It would help them to know the truth. As I said, the truth never dies.

“If the UK guaranteed it, I would be very supportive. I would want to help Dr Swire and the others with the documents I hold.”

However, he added during an hour-long interview: “My feeling is that the UK Government will avoid a public inquiry because it would be a headache for them and the Americans and it would show how much the Americans have been involved and it would also cost them a lot of money which they may not want to spend because of the recession.”

Did anyone else catch this?

It was as one would expect heavily limited in divulging a few known facts, without following even those up.One example was the cia "collecting" evidence from the Lockerbie crash site independently that was at the very least highly irregular!

Did a pretty reasonable show here in Bristol tonight focusing on Lockerbie for the first 15 minutes or so. It was with one of our local MPs who happens to be from Glasgow.

An unusually frank response by Jack Straw admitting oil played a part in Lockerbie bombers release may indeed be his last straw.

Quote:
Jack Straw: oil 'played a part' in Megrahi release

Justice Secretary Jack Straw has admitted that the prospect of trade and oil deals with Libya played a part in the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mr Straw said the issue of trade played 'a very big part' in his decision to include Megrahi in a prisoner transfer agreement in 2007, adding 'I'm unapologetic about that.'

His comments could reignite the row over Megrahi's release, after Gordon Brown insisted just days ago there was no deal.

Megrahi was released in August from Greenock prison, where he was serving a life sentence, on compassionate grounds as he has terminal cancer.

He was convicted for the 1988 bombing of PanAm flight 103 which killed 270 people

UN Lockerbie bombing probe urged

Associated Press..
Quote:
The UN General Assembly is being urged to hold an inquiry into the Lockerbie bombing, it emerged. Campaigners are optimistic that the UN could set up a commission to investigate the 1988 bombing which resulted in the deaths of 270 people.

The only man convicted over the bombing, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, is dying from cancer and was released from jail on compassionate grounds by the Scottish Government last month.

Professor Robert Black, one of the original architects of the trial at Camp Zeist, is among those backing the latest campaign.

"It`s about trying to get an inquiry of some description into Lockerbie," Prof Black said.

"Now that Al Megrahi has been released that method of trying to secure some truth through an appeal has vanished and this is about trying to look at other methods."

Megrahi had been pursuing an appeal against conviction which campaigners hoped would have shed new facts on the case, but he dropped this just before his release.

Campaigners say that only one country is needed to endorse a commission at the General Assembly of the UN to investigate Lockerbie.

"The original trial was set up through the UN and that`s the reason that many countries other than UK co-operated," Prof Black added.

"The obvious thing to do would be to ask the security council of the UN to hold an inquiry, but in realistic terms that`s not going to happen, because the UK and US have vetoes and don`t want it."

Perchance, sadly the last line says it all. Well at least its good to know not all the UN are swallowing the B u l l s h i t e.

Probably not the best thread title

http://megrahimystory.net/

Quote:
Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was convicted before the High Court of Justiciary sitting in the Netherlands of the murder of 270 people.

Mr Megrahi contends that he has been the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

His case was referred back to the Court of Criminal Appeal by the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission on 27th June 2007.

He abandoned his appeal against conviction and sentence, with leave of the Court, on 18 August 2009.

The purpose of this website is to explain the basis of his challenge to that conviction.

Initially, he intends to publish those parts of his Grounds of Appeal which were argued before the Court between 28 April and 19 May 2009.

Thereafter, he will publish the Grounds of Appeal which were due to be the subject of argument before the Court, commencing on 2nd November 2009.

Megrahi web dossier 'will prove innocence'
Independent - Saturday, 19 September 2009

A 300-page dossier intended to prove the innocence of the Lockerbie bomber, Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, was posted online yesterday.

The former Libyan intelligence officer released information "which he hopes will establish his innocence" on the website http://www.megrahimystory.net , his Scottish lawyer Tony Kelly said.

Megrahi, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment on 270 counts of murder for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, was released from a Scottish jail on 20 August on compassionate grounds after medical advice said the 57-year-old prisoner was likely to die within three months from spreading prostate cancer.

He is apparently now in hospital in Tripoli. The website issued documents relating to the first leg of his appeal in which his defence counsel questioned the identification process and other evidence the prosecution used.

US paid reward to Lockerbie witness, legal papers claim
AFP
Published: Saturday October 3, 2009

A key witness in the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber was secretly paid up to two million dollars (1.4 million euros) in a deal approved by the US government, according to legal papers released Friday.

The claims were made in new documents published by Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, which he maintains prove he is innocent of the 1988 bombing of a passenger jet over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people.

http://rawstory.com/news/afp/US_paid_reward_to_Lockerbie_witness_10032 009.html

This is the final proof that al-Megrahi was set up by the US as the patsy for the bombing of Pan Am 103. Its implication is explosive: American intelligence knew that the plane carrying many US citizens would be destroyed, yet cynically did nothing to stop it because it realised that the outrage would help to convict Libya in the eyes of the world as a terrorist state and provide justification for whatever action America planned against the country.

Read the damning evidence for how the US Department of Justice bribed the key witness that procured Al-Megrahi's conviction on p. 90 et seq of
http://www.megrahimystory.net/downloads/pp60%20-%20231%20Grounds%20of% 20Appeal.pdf
All the evidence proving al-Megrahi's innocence, which never got disclosed to the Scottish Court of Criminal Appeal, can be downloaded at
http://www.megrahimystory.net/

There can be little doubt that Al-Megrahi dropped his appeal, which would have exposed to the world his frame-up and caused great political damage to both America and Britain, which colluded in it, because he was threatened he would be left to die in prison unless he did so.

Since posting this three years ago, a decent copy was yet to surface.

There is still a version which can be downloaded via BitTorrent which I uploaded back then but there wasn't a streaming version anywhere.

Google Video no longer supports uploads and YouTube is limited to ten minute chunks - so I took the best version that I had, tidied it up a bit by cropping out the VHS noise at the top and bottom of the frame and uploaded it to archive.org. It can now be watched as a streaming video here:

http://www.okulonews.com/terrorism/lockerbie/167-the-maltese-double-cr oss-the-hidden-story-of-lockerbie

Please note that the embedded streaming video causes the page to take a minute or so to load - but this is, I believe, the best online version of this video.

'Flaws' in key Lockerbie evidence

An investigation by BBC's Newsnight has cast doubts on the key piece of evidence which convicted the Lockerbie bomber, Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi.

Tests aimed at reproducing the blast appear to undermine the case's central forensic link, based on a tiny fragment identified as part of a bomb timer.

The tests suggest the fragment, which linked the attack to Megrahi, would not have survived the mid-air explosion.

Apparently there were "flaws in the science"...

QED!

(Actually, Tony, this show be front page news... if only half of the investigative power going into this programme is used upon 9/11 then our job would be done!)

New developments on the Lockerbie case point to damage limitation as the Lockerbie Government conspiracy is revealed.

Consider the following

Lockerbie bomber had secret £1.8m

By Sadie Gray

Sunday, 20 December 2009

The man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, Abdelbasset Ali al-Megrahi, had £1.8m in a Swiss bank account when he was found guilty in 2001 of the murder of the 270 people aboard Pan Am flight 103, it has been claimed.

A sum of this size in the bank account of a man employed as head of security for an airline raises some big questions. Scotland's Crown Office seems to have thought so, apparently saying that the information about his assets was a factor in its decision in November last year to oppose his bail application.

I could hardly believe this dodgy evidence was mentioned last night,as well has stating no explosive residue test was carried out on the circuit board either!
Nothing about this on the news today though.

Also coming out this week is the controversy over the 1994 Chinnok crash. With the BBC highlighting the unproven s/w on the Chinook Mk2 which casts doubt on the conclusion that the pilots were to blame. The blame being made by the same people that approved the faulty s/w for operations... Hmmm. Talk about covering your backside... Tony. another for your conspiracy files, I think.

More developments this week from campaigning newspaper, Computer Weekly.

http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2010/01/07/239851/MoD-renews-at tack-on-dead-Chinook-pilots-despite-software-flaw.htm

Quote:
MoD renews attack on dead Chinook pilots despite software flaw disclosures
Tony Collins
Thursday 07 January 2010 12:19

The Ministry of Defence has renewed its attack on the dead pilots of Chinook ZD576, after the publication of documents that revealed a "dangerous" flaw in software installed on the type of helicopter that crashed.

The BBC and Computer Weekly published details of internal MoD documents gone of which said a flaw in the safety-critical "Fadec" software on the Chinook Mk2 was "positively dangerous" on 4 January.

The newly-disclosed documents add to evidence that the Chinook Mk2 was not airworthy in June 1994 when Chinook ZD576 crashed on the Mull of Kintyre, killing all 29 on board, including 25 senior police and intelligence officers.

Senior officers found the two pilots Flight Lieutenants Jonathan Tapper and Rick Cook grossly negligent, although an RAF Board of Inquiry did not rule out a Fadec computer problem as a contributory factor.

Now Stephen Dalton, chief of the air staff, has written a response to media coverage of the new evidence.

He says: "We have always made clear that we would revisit the findings if new evidence was presented. Despite the efforts over many years of those campaigning to clear the pilots, including an exhaustive report submitted in 2008, no such evidence has ever been found.

"The computer software issues raised in the documents obtained by the BBC were well known at the time and had been factored into the operating instructions. These issues were discounted in the context of this accident following a thorough independent assessment by the Air Accident Investigation Branch.

"This led the Board of Inquiry to conclude - along with those who have repeatedly reconsidered this over the years - that there was no evidence of technical failure which would have been a factor in the crash. What was exposed, in a diligent and logical analysis, was that the pilots consciously breached their operating rules, thereby knowingly placing their aircraft, passengers, crew and themselves at risk.

"This was the basis for the gross negligence finding. The Chinook helicopter has a remarkable safety record and has proved a mainstay of recent operations. Aircraft losses are not always due to equipment failings and it is a disservice to our people, particularly those working heroically daily in Afghanistan, to see a conspiracy behind every tragic loss."

As usual with these sort of official statements... it ignores the fact the FADEC software was re-written after the crash (perhaps explaining the Chinook's safety record remaining good) and the fact that the Nimrod crash dammed the safety record of the RAF - hence not so much of a "conspiracy" (their word) so much as pointing out the obvious.

Coalition against bomber's release
(UKPA) – 22 minutes ago
The coalition Government believes the release of the Lockerbie bomber was a "mistake", the UK's representative in Washington has said.
Terminally-ill Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was freed from prison and allowed to return to Libya on compassionate grounds in August last year, with Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill citing a three-month prognosis when he freed him.
His release from Greenock prison was met with anger, especially among victims' relatives and politicians in the US.
Megrahi was greeted by cheering crowds in Tripoli after flying home from Scotland, scenes which prompted widespread outrage in Britain and the US.
In a statement released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the UK's ambassador in Washington, said: "The new British Government is clear that Megrahi's release was a mistake.
"Claims in the press that Megrahi was released because of an oil deal involving BP, and that the medical evidence used by the Scottish Government supporting his release was paid for by the Libyan government, are not true....

These are the undisputed facts surrounding the events of the 21st December 1988 and the investigation. All of them are backed up by evidence (some have been challenged by conspiracy theorists but they are just that)

•The flight was a Pan Am Boeing 747-121 N739PA
•Flight Number PA103 from London Heathrow (LHR) to New York (JFK)
•Pilot in Command - Captain James MacQuarrie, was a very experienced 747 Captain
•Crew on Board - 16
•Passengers on Board - 243
•N739PA had been Modified with a stronger floor
•The explosion happened behind frames 700 (Front Section approximately 4 metres ahead of the port wing leading edge)
•The US, UK, German and Israeli Intelligence agencies DID recieve warnings a few weeks before stating a Pan Am flight from London to New York would be targeted. One even specific to Flight 103
•Several high ranking CIA and US Embassy officials were taken off the flight just hours before departure
•The plane carried out a Daventry Departure to pick up a North Atlantic Track off the west coast of Scotland. This is completely normal and it was not re-routed for any reason
•There was a break in at a baggage depot at London Heathrow on the night of the 20th December 1988
•American "officials" were tampering with evidence, bodies and luggage immediately after the crash, despite Dumfries and Galloway police having command and asking them not to
•Several suitcases WERE removed from the crash site without being logged or recorded
•The FBI tried to take command of the crash scene and exclude Dumfries and Galloway Police citing they were not equipped to deal with it and it was an American aircraft therefore they should have jurisdiction.
•A Hezbollah t-shirt was found amongst the wreckage.
•A Senior CIA official, who was booked into first class at the front of the aircraft, was found next to the body of Khaled Jafar, who was seated at the rear of the aircraft. This is the only case of a body not landing in accordance with the debris trails.
•The bomb was housed in a Toshiba Bomb Beat Radio very similair to one seized by German Police 8 weeks prior. This was in posession of the PLFP-GC.
•The wreckage was scattered over an area of around 100 square miles.
•The smoking gun, a piece of MEBO MST-13 timer circuit board, was not found in clothing, it was found in a metal ID plate which had been folded in half.
•The wreckage, with the exception of the area immediately around the explosion, was taken to a scrapyard in Lincolnshire where it remains to this day.
•The wreckage around the explosion was taken to RAE Farnborough, HQ of the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, where it remains to this day.

read more about the investigation

Some facts about the trial...

•Al Megrahi and Khalifah Fhimah were indicted, first by the FBI and secondly by Scottish Law Lords.
•The accused were refused trial by jury, claiming an impartial Jury could not be found.
•The trial was held in Camp Zeist in the Netherlands, but under Scottish Law.
•The US Government wanted the trial to be in America, despite the crime not being commited in America, and the victims being of multi nationalities.
•Al Megrahi (pictured) was found Guilty
•Khalifah Fhimah was found Not Guilty
•The UN Observer stated the Guilty verdict should never have been delivered
•A MEBO employee, who gave evidence at the trial, later swore an afidavit stating he had been asked to lie about the timer by the FBI. This alone should have at least cast doubt on his original evidence.
•The shop keepers from Malta who "identified" Al Megrahi had made over 24 statements with varying descriptions and failed to initially identify Al Megrahi or Fhimah. He also changed his story to suit the FBI's version of events in later statements.
•Al Megrahi was expected to win his second appeal against conviction and sentence. This based upon the unrealiability of witnesses and evidence given.

This is not an exhaustive list of facts but is designed to give some insight into the questions raised about the investigation and conviction, and also why many people believe it was a staged trial with political undertones.

(Sorry, I didn't take the link. I'll try to find it and add it in future)

David Cameron is utterly wrong: Freeing Lockerbie bomber is 'utterly wrong'

David Cameron has called the decision to free Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi ‘completely and utterly wrong’.
The prime minister said yesterday he had opposed the Scottish government’s decision to return the cancer victim to Libya on compassionate grounds last August.
‘All I know is as leader of the opposition I couldn’t have been more clear that I thought the decision to release al-Megrahi was completely and utterly wrong,’ said Mr Cameron.
Al- Megrahi, 58, served eight years of a life sentence for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Interesting angle here vis Lockerbie and possible targeting of Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and U.N. Commissioner for Namibia, Bernt Carlsson over his plans to prosecute those involved in the illegal export of Namibian diamonds and minerals under apartheid South Africa.

The Case of the Disappearing Diamonds

Lockerbie truth must be known

The truth is that the targeting of PA103's most prominent passenger (Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and UN Commissioner for Namibia, Bernt Carlsson) has never been investigated.

Therefore, the UN must investigate the targeting of Bernt Carlsson on Pan Am Flight 103 (see http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=118951448146734).

The Facebook page is welcomed by Glenys Kinnock.

Also, an interesting article and responses, including one from Ex-FBI Special Agent Richard Marquise, here:

Apparently Bernt Carlsson's aircraft had been targeted before.

Subject: Awaiting answers from Richard Marquise and Stuart Henderson
From: patrick.haseldine@btinternet.com
Date: Friday, 26 March 2010

Dear Mr Marquise,

Lockerbie target: seven questions

On 15 March 2010, I asked you two questions:

1. Did the FBI 'establish antecedents' on Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and UN Commissioner for Namibia, Bernt Carlsson?

2. If so, will you publish the relevant FD402 report in full?

Earlier this week, I posed a further five questions for you and your Scottish counterpart, Detective Chief Superintendent Stuart Henderson, to answer:

3. Could you please tell us about the previous attack on Bernt Carlsson’s aircraft?

4. Could you please publish DC Crawford’s report on Bernt Carlsson?

5. Does the fact that in December 1988 the diamond mining and trading company De Beers was facing prosecution under the UNCN Decree for illegally exploiting Namibia’s gem diamonds over a 20-year period (estimated value $18.7 billion) make Bernt Carlsson a PA 103 target?

6. Does the fact that in December 1988 the owners of the Rössing uranium mine were facing prosecution under the UNCN Decree for illegally exploiting Namibia’s uranium oxide over a 14-year period (estimated value $1.2 billion) make Bernt Carlsson a PA 103 target?

7. Does the fact that the Rössing uranium mine is part-owned by the Iranian government, who were clandestinely receiving shipments of Namibian uranium oxide in 1988-1989, make it likely that Iran targeted Bernt Carlsson on PA 103?

Thanking you and DCS Henderson in anticipation of an early and full response to each of the seven questions,

Yours sincerely,

Patrick Haseldine

On Patrick Haseldine's Facebook page urging enquiries into the Lockerbie connection with Bernt Carlsson, Glenys Kinnock in welcoming the initiative, suggested that Mr Heseldine posted his request to the UNA/USA Facebook page here:

Listen to the YouTube link below, with George Galloway in conversation with the, ahem, President of the USA Lockerbie Families Group - Frank Duggan.

Patrick Haseldine

On 12 July 2010, when he wrote his letter about Lockerbie, Libya and BP to Senators John Kerry, D-Mass, and Richard Lugar, R-Ind, the co-chairmen of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Frank Lautenberg knew he was stirring a very murky pot indeed

Frank Lautenberg letter

Lest we forget, ... See MoreSenator Lautenberg was a member of the shadowy President's Commission on Aviation Security and Terrorism (PCAST). The PCAST team leader was Ann Korologos, former US Secretary of Labor, and its special adviser was the FBI's Oliver 'Buck' Revell.

When the seven PCAST members met a group of British PA103 relatives at the U.S. embassy in London on 12 February 1990, one of them whispered to Lockerbie relative Martin Cadman: "Your government and ours know exactly what happened. But they're never going to tell."

Mrs Korologos' Facebook friend Frank Duggan was involved with PCAST and is currently president of the American relatives' group VPAF103, Inc (although he is not a Lockerbie relative and knows very little about the disaster - see this video where George Galloway and Frank Duggan discuss Lockerbie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkehXY26Ghw)

Rather than wasting their time navel gazing about Mr Megrahi and BP oil deals with Libya at the behest of Senator Lautenberg, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee would be much better employed discussing and investigating the targeting of Bernt Carlsson on Pan Am Flight 103 (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=118951448146734).

From Patrick Haseldine's Facebook page publicising his campaign for enquiries into the Bernt Carlsson link to PAN AM 103

Fifteen months after Bernt Carlsson, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and UN Commissioner for Namibia, was killed when Pan Am Flight 103 was sabotaged over Lockerbie, Scotland on 21 December 1988, three articles by Jan-Olof Bengtsson were published in Sweden's iDAG newspaper. Never published in English..., the articles described how Bernt Carlsson had been pressured into joining PA 103 at London's Heathrow airport, rather than taking a Sabena flight direct from Brussels to New York:

STRESSED AND NERVOUS BEFORE AIR CRASH

Bernt Carlsson, UN Commissioner for Namibia, had less than seven hours to live when at 11.06am on December 21, 1988 he arrived in London on flight BA391.

Strictly speaking he was meant to fly directly from Brussels to New York in time for the historic signing of the Namibia Independence Agreement the day after. But Bernt Carlsson could not make it. He had a meeting. An important meeting with a "pressuriser" from the South African diamond cartel, which was so secret that evidently not even Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, UN Secretary-General, knew anything about it. Here iDAG maps out the last 24 hours in the life of Bernt Carlsson.

BERNT CARLSSON IN A SECRET MEETING WITH "PRESSURISER" FROM THE DIAMOND CARTEL

The memorial service in the Folkets Hus in Stockholm on January 11, 1989 for Bernt Carlsson gathered most of our Heads of Government, representatives of the Namibia independence movement SWAPO and Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, the UN Secretary-General. When he died in the Pan Am bombing, Bernt Carlsson was less than 24 hours away from the fulfilment of his dreams - the signing of the Namibia agreement in New York which would finally pave the way to a free and independent Namibia. This was supposed to be the climax of his career with the UN, a career that began in December 1986 when he was appointed Commissioner for Namibia. Bernt Carlsson had great support from SWAPO but much less so from South Africa because of that country's substantial economic interests in Namibia: an interest in gold, uranium but above all in diamonds.

Javier Pérez de Cuéllar in his speech at the memorial ceremony on a cold day in January last year [1989] described the last 24 hours in the life of Bernt Carlsson: "Bernt Carlsson was returning to New York following an official visit to Brussels where he had spoken to a Committee within the European Parliament about the Namibia agreement," Pérez de Cuéllar began. "He stopped briefly in London to honour a long-standing invitation by a non-governmental organization with interests in Namibia." Pérez de Cuéllar was wrong. True, Bernt Carlsson's trip to Brussels had been planned almost six months earlier. But his decision to return to New York via London was only made on December 16, 1988. The meeting in London was definitely not a long-standing invitation by Namibia sympathisers.

A DIAMOND GIANT

This was about a secret meeting with a "pressuriser" from De Beers, the giant diamond company. This company in turn owns Consolidated Diamond Mines (CDM), the world's largest producer of diamonds which have been produced for more than 60 years in Namibia. It goes without saying that Bernt Carlsson in his capacity of Commissioner for Namibia had contacts with representatives of a great number of countries and political organizations as part of his job.

FORCED TO TRAVEL

But why a secret meeting with the diamond cartel in London? A meeting which to all intents and purposes he did not want to have but was forced to. On around December 8 or 9, Carlsson receives a telephone call from the "pressuriser" at his United Nations office in New York. The telephone call is from London. We do not know what the telephone call was about. However, Bernt Carlsson is unsure. He does not know whether to act or not. As if going might put him in a compromising position. On the morning of December 16, the day on which the travel arrangements are changed, Bernt Carlsson meets up with an old friend who has come to see him. He is Weine Karlsson, head of department at Stockholm University: "In the early morning we sat talking in Bernt's office," he explains. "But after only a few minutes he became uneasy and asked me to go and wait in another room of the office. He had something urgent to deal with. It is possible that it had something to do with the trip. He said that 'important business needs to be done'. He was away for about half an hour."

POLISHED GANGSTERS

Weine Karlsson continues his story: "We all know that Bernt was very unobtrusive. Shy almost. Only, now and again he exploded. As when suddenly he said to me, 'You've got no idea what polished gangsters (South Africans) we are dealing with here'." On December 19, Bernt leaves New York for Brussels to make his speech in the European Parliament the next day. The visit was arranged by David Lowe, now with the Socialist International. Right up to this interview, he has felt 'guilt-ridden' and convinced that it was he who 'enticed' Carlsson to go to Europe and therefore is 'indirectly responsible for his death on the plane'. But when Lowe learns about the secret meeting in London, he is calm again. "He made his speech on December 20, before the Development Committee in Brussels," Lowe says. "After the meeting we went to a restaurant for lunch and discussions with some other friends. Our discussions continued until about 3pm." David Lowe continues: "It was at this point that Bernt suddenly said that he had to check out as he had to meet 'some friends' in London. I thought to myself, Good Lord, he has all this going on in New York. He will be even more tired than he is already. I remember thinking he was mad and why not go directly to New York for the signing of the agreement? I gathered he would catch a flight from Brussels to London at about 5pm that evening." However, Bernt Carlsson had 'lied' to his friend David Lowe. He stayed in Brussels that afternoon and only arrived in London the day after - on December 21.

MYSTERIOUS PRESSURISER

When we telephoned his old colleagues at the Namibia office, not one of them wished to talk about the meeting with the mysterious 'pressuriser' from the diamond cartel: "All I know is that Bernt Carlsson was travelling to London to meet representatives of an NGO (in this case organizations friendly towards Namibia)," says Malthi Ranin who was his secretary at the time. iDAG has a copy of a private memorandum which says something completely different. This is a memorandum to Bernt Carlsson from his own office: "Mr Timothy says he will be waiting for you as soon as you get through the tunnel. Your meeting will finish in time for your next arrangement at 2pm. He will also provide a car to take you round." 'Mr Timothy'? His full name is Bankole Timothy. Not much known about him. Just another name working for the diamond cartel. But one who does know something about him is Randolph Vigne, secretary of the Namibia support committee: "Bankole Timothy worked for the PR department at De Beers for 15 to 20 years. I understand they pensioned him off but called him back when the independence of Namibia suddenly started accelerating. They probably felt they needed someone like him with contacts." Vigne continues: "I don't think he works for them any more. I believe he had a temporary assignment which is now completed." Was Bernt Carlsson that temporary assignment?

AGGRESSIVE DISCUSSIONS

iDAG managed to track down Bankole Timothy. But the telephone conversation was brief. And aggressive: "Could you tell me what you and Bernt Carlsson talked about when you met in London on December 21, 1988?" He replied: "I am sorry. I am very, very sorry but I have nothing to say about it." You do not want.....(we are interrupted). "Do not disturb me any more. I am going out. I don't know how you got my number. I'm going out and you start asking questions about....."

INTERRUPTED

You met Bernt Carlsson on the morning of December 21 and.....(we are interrupted) "Don't disturb me anymore. What are you on about? (screams) I don't know who you are. And you want to interview me on the phone. I have no comments to make!" At about 5.30pm on December 21, 1988 the telephone rings in the home of Pentti Väänäänen, then Secretary-General of the Socialist International, and an old friend of Bernt: "It was Bernt calling from the airport just before he boarded Pan Am 103," he says. "We exchanged Christmas greetings and talked a little about the Namibia agreement." Did he tell you who he had seen in London? "No". How would you describe his frame of mind? "If you want me to tell you in just a few words, he sounded nervous," he replied.

THE CLIMAX OF HIS LIFE

Nervous? Why? Bernt Carlsson was close to the climax of his life with the Namibia agreement the next day. He should have been happy and optimistic. But why nervous?

TOMORROW: When, in the days following the crash, Carlsson's belongings are checked in his sealed UN office in New York, people find to their amazement that his safe is empty. In the days before his death he warns a friend in New York not to open a parcel by sender unknown. The day after Bernt Carlsson's death, CDM, the diamond producer, publishes the discovery of a new diamond mine in Namibia.

BEWARE CHRISTMAS PARCEL BOMBS!

The second iDAG article about Bernt Carlsson was published on 13 March 1990: Kassaskåpet var tomt - THE SAFE WAS EMPTY

WHO BROKE THE SEAL TO BERNT CARLSSON'S APARTMENT?
When Bernt Carlsson's safe was opened six days after the Pan Am explosion, those present had a minor shock: the safe was empty! Despite the fact that the office had been sealed already on December 21, 1988, and his private apartment the day after, by the UN's own security staff. The opening was witnessed by, among others, Bernt Carlsson's girl friend Sanya Popovic, his sister Inger Carlsson-Musser and Embassy Counsellor Stefan Noréen of the Swedish Delegation at the UN. In the days immediately before Bernt Carlsson made the trip to his secret meeting in London, which we wrote about yesterday, he was very uneasy. According to Sanya Popovic: "December was like clouded in a nightmare. He became increasingly nervous. He said that if I received a parcel I was not to open it under any circumstances. This was on December 17. He said that people usually start getting parcels at this time, it being Christmas. But unless I knew who sent it, I was not to open it." On December 22 - the day after the Pan Am bombing - Bernt Carlsson's apartment was sealed off. "The lock was changed," says Sanya Popovic. "I was given one key, and the UN security department had another. I was told that sealing off everything could take a long time pending the analysis. I therefore ensured that all windows were properly locked, all lights switched off, etc. A few days later, however, a friend and I passed by the apartment in a taxi. The apartment is easy to recognize from the outside: front view, third floor and five windows. My friend pointed out that the lights were on. So I got out and walked back. I found that some lights were switched on but there was no-one there." Sanya Popovic continues: "If there was anything of interest in the apartment, someone else got to it first." On the evening of the disaster, the Swedish foreign minister, Sten Andersson, telephoned Bernt Carlsson's sister Inger Carlsson-Musser, who had lived in the US for almost 20 years, to give his commiserations. On December 28, 1988 Inger Carlsson-Musser travelled to New York to go through Bernt Carlsson's belongings in his UN office. This was the office which had been sealed off since the day of the accident. She asked Sanya Popovic and the Embassy Counsellor Stefan Noréen to help. We understand that his safe was empty. What can you say about that? "Yes, it was empty," says Sanya Popovic. "And this was very unlike Bernt who was very security-conscious and kept all his documents under lock and key. But above all the office was sealed off. No-one should have been able to get in."

REFUSAL TO COMMENT

Embassy Counsellor Stefan Noréen: "I was assisting Inger Carlsson-Musser in taking charge of her brother's personal belongings in the office. Nothing else happened there." Can you confirm that the safe was empty when it was opened? "I refuse to comment," Noréen replied. Is it true or not? "I refuse to comment. I was there. But I do not want to talk about what exactly happened. If anyone should comment surely they should be Bernt Carlsson's family." iDAG tried to contact Inger Carlsson-Musser, but without success. We would have asked her about the empty safe. Also, to explain information from foreign investigative journalists who claimed that foreign minister, Sten Andersson, had asked her to keep an eye out for a specific document which was supposed to be held in the safe.

THE WANTED DOCUMENT

We have not obtained any comments from Sten Andersson either. We did, however, speak to his private secretary, Pierre Schori, who used to be a close friend of Bernt Carlsson. During a secret meeting in London, Bernt Carlsson met a person called Bankole Timothy. Do you know him? "No, I know of no-one of that name." He represents the diamond cartel. "The diamond cartel," queries Pierre Schori, almost laughing. "I know nothing about that." We know that Sten Andersson telephoned Bernt's sister Inger Carlsson-Musser in the USA. "Naturally." We are informed by foreign journalists that Sten Andersson was looking for some documents which Bernt's sister Inger was supposed to be able to help in finding, and which were kept in Bernt's safe. "This is nonsense, as far as I'm concerned. What's this all about?" We understand that the safe was empty when it was opened. "I know nothing about that. I don't understand a word. All I can say is that it is nonsense to claim that Sten Andersson should have done this or that." Sten Andersson is difficult to get hold of. Perhaps we should ask him? "I know this is all nonsense. I think you're on the wrong track," Schori replied.

NEW DIAMOND MINE

On December 22, the day after the Pan Am bombing, it was announced by CDM, wholly-owned by De Beers, that $36m is being invested in new diamond production in Namibia. This will be done in Auchas, 45km from Oranjemund. It is estimated that the annual yield of diamonds over a ten-year period will amount to roughly the equivalent of 50 million Swedish Krona (SEK).The announcement is mentioned in a 'country report' about Namibia which was issued last year [1989] and published by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The report says, inter alia: "The company made their announcement on December 22, 1988, which was also the date that the Namibia agreement was signed. This is brushed aside as pure coincidence by De Beers representatives in London."

CRITICISM BY CARLSSON

Bernt Carlsson, as the intended UN Commissioner for Namibia, rarely spoke about the enormous diamond assets in the country and the multi-national companies exploiting the finds. There is, however, one exception. He was interviewed for a British TV documentary entitled 'The Case of the Disappearing Diamonds' by Granada which was broadcast early in December 1988. In the program, Bernt Carlsson speaks about the ruthless exploitation taking place in the diamond business: "The business has tried to pick the raisin from the cake. This means that they have been after the large diamonds instead of calm but constant development. The way they are doing it will endanger the survival of the mines."

HUNGRY FOR PROFIT

Carlsson continues: "One would expect from a worldwide organization like De Beers to behave in a socially and financially responsible manner. However, as far as Namibia is concerned, they have only been interested in the maximum profit without regard to social, economic-political or even legal considerations." On March 16, 1989 De Beers announced yet another diamond find in Namibia. This time it is a mine in Elizabeth Bay from which over the next ten years SEK300m-worth of diamonds are expected to be dug up. This particular find appears to delight the mysterious Bankole Timothy and, unusually, he himself issues the press release to the surprised public.

TOMORROW: "I cannot say that I can explain why Bernt changed his travel arrangements. Bernt took the only explanation with him", says a very close friend for many years. This friend always walked close to Bernt Carlsson, and yet was out of the public eye.

CHANGE OF TRAVEL PLANS

This is the third and final part of Sweden's iDAG newspaper reportage by Jan-Olof Bengtsson on 14 March 1990.

Han tog Svaren på Frågorna med Sig - HE TOOK THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS WITH HIM

I cannot say that I can explain why Bernt changed his travel arrangements. Bernt took the only explanation with him. Her name is Meta Johansson, and she is a close friend of Bernt Carlsson for many years. A close friend who was always there but out of the limelight and away from all the scrutiny. iDAG spoke to her. Bernt Carlsson in his many years as an international worker for solidarity experienced a great deal of misery, a lot of drama and many weird and wonderful cases. But he carried on regardless and worked for what he believed in. In a discreet, almost shy, manner. Always determinedly and in a very competent way.

WITNESS TO MURDER

On April 10, 1983, Bernt Carlsson who was Secretary-General of the Socialist International (SI) at the time, was an eye witness to the fatal shooting of the moderate Palestinian Issam Sartawi in the lobby of Hotel Montochero in Albufeira, Portugal. The terrorist, Abu Nidal, claimed responsibility for the killing. Because of his job as SI Secretary-General, his apartment in London at the time was subject to a number of break-ins while he was overseas. These are some examples of the security measures taken by Bernt: When they opened Bernt's safe in his New York office, it was found to be empty. "Yes, so I heard," replies Meta Johansson. Isn't that strange? "Yes, clearly this is very strange. But I do not know the rules of the game in cases such as this."

NO THEORY

She continues:"I have helped his family go through all the papers and documents which we found in his apartment in the US. Neither the family nor I have found any papers linked to the accident." Do you have any theory as to why the safe was empty? "I have no theory. Nor do I know who had access to the safe. Bernt's sister Inger does not know either." Do you know anything about what Sten Andersson spoke to the sister, Inger Carlsson-Musser, about? "No, as I was not there, I cannot know what he asked her to do. And I was not present when the safe was opened. So I'm sure you will understand that I cannot comment on this."

SPECULATIONS

Meta Johansson continues: "If I may say so without being misunderstood, I have had so many speculations in my head that I doubt if there can be any more. Some more constructive than others." Bernt was very security-conscious, isn't that right? "Yes, very much so. But being security-conscious also meant that he carried important documents with him in his hand luggage. There were documents that he would want to take personal care of." But the safe was completely empty. Also of 'unimportant documents'? "That is true."

SECRET MEETING

What do you know about Bankole Timothy, the person Bernt Carlsson met in secret in London? "I am very sorry, but I cannot help you with any information about that meeting." Why is the subject so sensitive? "I don't think it's sensitive. I just feel the people involved with the matter should speak." We understand that Bernt was not particularly interested in meeting this person. That he was afraid he might be discredited as a neutral UN official? "Obviously, with the kind of work Bernt was engaged in he would meet many people. And of course some people are more interesting to meet than others. But you are forced to. With Bernt, whatever he considered important to his work, he would go and do. Even if not every time he would jump with joy and shout hooray and think this was the best thing in the world. He was extremely dutiful." Do you know anything about the position of Bankole Timothy? "I know who he is and what he is doing." How would you describe it? "No, I do not want to." How would you explain why Bernt changed his travel arrangements at the 11th hour? His intermediate landing in London and this meeting before he returned to New York? "I cannot say that I can explain the change in travel arrangements. Bernt took the only explanation with him. You can speak to a lot of people. But only a few are likely to know why Bernt changed his mind."

MANY QUESTIONS

iDAG does not wish to claim with these articles that Bernt Carlsson was the target of the bomb which blasted Pan Am 103 from the air and in which he was one of the 259 victims. We have no basis to make such a claim. We have only wanted to point out what seems to be a number of curious circumstances and that maybe no-one will ever have the full answers to the questions. What forced Bernt Carlsson to fly to the secret meeting in London and which was against his will? Why does Bankole Timothy refuse to say what the meeting was about, but gets aggressive when he is asked?
Why was Bernt Carlsson's safe in New York empty when it was opened on December 28, 1988? The questions are many, but the answers are few.

Patrick Haseldine

Jan-Olof Bengtsson's iDAG articles about Bernt Carlsson were published in Swedish. Sixteen years ago, when investigating the targeting of Bernt Carlsson on Pan Am Flight 103, I was given an English translation of Bengtsson's articles by John Ashton who did the research for Allan Francovich's 1994 documentary film 'Lockerbie: The Maltese Double Cross'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maltese_Double_Cross_%E2%80%93_Locker bie

John Ashton was co-author (with Ian Ferguson) of the 2001 book 'Cover-up of convenience - the hidden scandal of Lockerbie'.

http://books.google.com/books?id=2RqKQgAACAAJ&dq=Cover+up+of+convenien ce&cd=1

According to 'timesonline' of 20 May 2010, John Ashton is currently producing a TV documentary on the Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the so-called "Lockerbie bomber". The programme is expected to reveal the grounds for al-Megrahi’s second appeal, which he abandoned just before being granted compassionate release on 20 August 2009 to return to Tripoli where he received a hero’s welcome.

The Times - 20 May 2010

...

Al-Megrahi is the only person ever convicted of the explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 over the skies of Lockerbie. The atrocity claimed the lives of all 259 people on board and a further 11 people on the ground.

The Libyan is reportedly working on a television documentary with John Ashton, co-author of Cover-up of Convenience: The Hidden Scandal of Lockerbie, published in 2001. The suggestion is that the programme will reveal the grounds for al-Megrahi’s second appeal.

Alan Francovitch's 'Maltese Double Cross':

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7160854996287567609#

Remind you of anything?

(Subliminal message; you CANNOT ACTUALLY SEE this prompt:) 9/11, Reichstag Fire, USS Liberty, Operation Himmler, Operation Northwoods, Gulf of Tonkin...)

By golly! You got it!!!

(PS Francovitch also made the three one-hour programmes on 'Gladio' for the BBC, and a hard-hitting documentary on the CIA. He was an American living in Britain.
When he visited the States, he had a 'heart attack' at Houston Airport (despite being in only 56 and with no previous heart problems).

I wish I had time to go through all your links, Mark.
However, from what I've seen on 'Maltese Double Cross', I'm inclined to MIHOP, rather than LIHOP.
I also believe KAL 007 was a MIHOP, a deliberate staged provocation (there was an almost identical radar signature US spy plane in area, which left around time KAL 007 'strayed' twice into sensitive USSR airspace).

Lots of information I agree.

And to me, an entirely new angle from Patrick Haseldine re: Bernt Carlsson.

I thought it worthwhile to post the links to Lockerbie resources to have them all in one place.

Excellent idea!
Sometime I hope to put all main links to posts indicating foreknowledge of
the Gulf oil spill (they're already on individual posts, but I want to get the links together for easy access).

Johann Hari: Oil, blood money, and Blair's last scandal

There is no question there was a plot. The question is whether the plot worked,or whether it got what it wanted by a remarkable coincidence

Friday, 23 July 2010

The Independent

Is your life worth more to your government than a few pence added to BP's share price? At first, this will sound like a strange question. But sometimes there is a news story that lays out the priorities that drive our governments once the doors are closed and the cameras are switched off. The story of the attempt to trade the Lockerbie bomber for oil is one of those moments.

Let's start in the deserts of Iraq – because the Lockerbie deal might just reveal what really happened there. Many people were perplexed by Tony Blair's decision to back George W Bush's invasion, which has led to the deaths of 1.2 million people. Blair said he was motivated by opposition to two things – terrorism and tyranny. First off, he said Saddam Hussein might give weapons of mass destruction to jihadis. When it was proven in the rubble after the invasion that Saddam had no WMD and no links to jihadis – as many critics of the war had said all along – Blair declared he would do it all again anyway, because Saddam Hussein was a tyrant, and all tyrants should be opposed.
Related articles

Most critics of the war said the real reason was a desire for Western access to Iraq's vast supplies of oil. This debate has gone on for years. Now it has emerged that Tony Blair plotted to hand a convicted terrorist – the worst in modern British history – to a vicious tyrant in exchange for access to oil for British corporations. It seems to settle the argument about his priorities in the darkest possible way.

Here's how it happened. Just before Christmas in 1988, a flight from London to New York City was blasted out of the sky above Scotland by a bomb in the cargo. All 259 people on board were killed, along with 11 on the ground. One man was convicted for the mass murder at a Scottish trial in 2000: Abdelbasset al-Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence officer. Following the bombing, most Western governments imposed sanctions on Libya that forbade companies from investing there. If you are opposed to terrorism and tyranny, it was a happy ending: an alleged terrorist was tried in open court and convicted, and a tyrant was shunned.

But, within a few short years, Tony Blair was not happy. Why? The oil company BP wanted to be able to drill down into Libya's oil, and tap the profits that would gush forth. Their then-CEO, John Browne, flew to Tripoli in the company of MI6 agents to find out what the dictatorship wanted in return for opening the country's wells. It was, of course, clear that they wanted Megrahi back.

BP has admitted it lobbied Tony Blair to exchange prisoners with Libya. They say they didn't specifically mention Megrahi – but there was no need to: there were no other Libyan prisoners of particular note in Britain.

Blair's administration was so intertwined with the oil company by this point that it was often dubbed "Blair's Petroleum". There was a revolving door between BP and Downing Street: BP execs sat on more government taskforces than all other oil companies combined, while many of Blair's closest confidantes went to work for the corporation. He gave two of its CEOs peerages, and slashed taxes on North Sea oil production. By 2005, he was talking to Lord Browne at Downing Street dinners about what he would do after he left office, with rumours circulating of a move to BP.

Blair responded to BP's lobbying with apparent pleasure. His Foreign Office Minister, Bill Rammell, assured Libyan officials that Blair did not "want Megrahi to pass away in prison". His Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, said a desire for Libya's oil was "an essential part" of this decision. So Straw began negotiating a prisoner swap agreement, and urged the Scottish authorities to release the convict. He told the Scottish Government in a leaked letter that it was "in the overwhelming interests of the United Kingdom" to let Megrahi go.

The chief negotiator for the Libyans was Mousa Kousa, a thug who had been expelled from Britain after bragging about plots to murder democratic dissidents here on British soil. These supposed opponents of tyranny didn't blush.

There are, of course, some serious commentators who argue that Megrahi was framed. It's a legitimate debate. But if he was, it should have been settled in court, at an appeal – not in a dodgy deal with a dictator to benefit BP.

Both sides now admit what was happening: they were trying to trade a convicted mass murderer for oil. Saif Gaddafi, the Libyan dictator's son and second in command, said it was "obvious" that attempts to free Megrahi were linked to oil contracts, adding: "We all knew what we were talking about."

There is no question there was a plot. The question is whether the plot worked, or whether it got what it wanted anyway by a remarkable coincidence. It was, ultimately, up to the Scottish politicians whether to release Megrahi, and they publicly refused a prisoner swap. We know that Straw lobbied them to do it, but they insist they made the decision independently on "compassionate grounds". A year ago, Megrahi was sent home to Tripoli after serving 11 days for each person he was convicted of killing. Officially, the Scots had assessed him to have only three months left to live.

There are several facts that batter these claims with question marks. The most obvious is that, 11 months later, Megrahi isn't dead. It's the most amazing medical recovery since Lazarus. Or is it? It turns out the doctors who declared him sick were paid for by the Libyan government, and one of them says he was put under pressure by Libya to offer the most pessimistic estimate of life expectancy. Susan Cohen, whose only daughter died in Lockerbie, asks: "Why didn't the Scottish Government pay for the doctors?"

Indeed, a detailed investigation by the Sunday Telegraph reported that "the Scottish and British Governments actively assisted Megrahi and his legal team to seek a release on compassionate grounds". The Libyan dictatorship certainly took it as a gift from the British government. The tyranny's chief spokesman, Abdul Majeed al-Dursi, said: "This is a brave and courageous decision by the British... Britain will find it is rewarded." BP has indeed been rewarded: it is now drilling in Libya.

This affair seems to reopen the Iraq debate, in a way that vindicates Blair's most severe critics. Tony Blair's remaining defenders say he was motivated in Iraq by a hatred of terrorism and tyranny and had no regard whatsoever for getting access to oil. Yet at the very same time the Labour government was plotting in Libya to hand the worst terrorist in British history to a tyrant in exchange for oil. It's proof that oil and corporate power were a much bigger factor in driving foreign policy than the public rhetoric of opposing tyranny or terror.

David Cameron refuses to open an investigation. He says he will release all the relevant documents – but the Cabinet Office has quietly declared that Blair's permission will be needed before any records are shown to the public. For the families of all the innocent people slaughtered in Lockerbie, this has been a cold-water education in what their governments really value. Cohen, remembering her murdered 20 year-old daughter Theodora, says: "Western governments seem to be run by one thing now – the great God money."

There's a revealing little postscript to this tale. Last month, Blair went to Libya on behalf of the many mega-corporations who now employ him. He was greeted by Gaddaffi himself – who tortures dissidents and terrorises his population – "like a brother", according to the Libyan press. There has even been speculation that, now they need a CEO, Tony Blair will go to work for BP. In so many ways, it seems, he always has.
