Scientists and physicians send appeal about 5G rollout and health dangers to the European Union

On September 13, 2017, more than 180 scientists and doctors sent an 11-page Appeal for a moratorium on the roll out of 5G in the European Union.

The reason for the appeal is that “RF/EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment,” but 5G has not been investigated fully for potential health hazards and environmental impact by INDEPENDENT scientists other than industry scientists, who apparently would rubber stamp 5G similarly as the other generations of telecommunications updates have been.

According to the Appeal, 5G is effective only over short distances and is transmitted poorly through solid materials. Because of that inefficiency in transmission, a tremendous number of antennas or cell towers will be needed to implement 5G service.

One key paragraph jumped out for me:

With “the ever more extensive use of wireless technologies,” nobody can avoid being exposed. Because on top of the increased number of 5G-transmitters (even within housing, shops and in hospitals) according to estimates, ”10 to 20 billion connections” (to refrigerators, washing machines, surveillance cameras, self-driving cars and buses, etc.) will be part of the Internet of Things. All these together can cause a substantial increase in the total, long term RF-EMF exposure to all EU citizens. [CJF emphasis]

Cell phone towers dot the landscape every so many hundred or thousand feet in most places, especially along interstate highways and on higher or hill-top locations. Because there is such a demand for cell phone service—more cell phones now than the total global population—more and more technology means of providing service have to be implemented. However, cell towers cost around $150,000 each to erect. Consequently, cell providers want less expensive ‘infrastructure’ to be able to provide faster and ‘better’ service, therefore, the introduction of “5G”, which no one knows what that “generation of service” will do to humans, wildlife and the environment.

One of the more resolute EMR/RF/cell phone radiation researchers is Lloyd Burrell of Royan Poitou Charentes, France, in the European Union. Lloyd does an exceptional job of researching, providing a newsletter and also interviewing other researchers on his weekly Internet show, which can be accessed at ElectricSense and lloyd@electricsense.com.

Recently Lloyd produced an extremely informative document about “Cell Tower Radiation & Cancer, The Facts” wherein he listed 17 References and/or citations from scientific journals pointing out connections between cell towers and cancer. I’ve taken the liberty to reproduce those References below, as they point to apparent health hazards that are ‘overlooked’ in favor of implementing cell phone and tech services.

If the research below indicates problems, especially cancer, what can we expect from 5G? No one really knows!

Currently, 5G is being “trial run” at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea where it is being used to deal with wild boar that roam the countryside and pose threats to those frequenting Winter Olympic venues.

Fortune Magazine published a report by Bloomberg News about how 5G was being used “to ward off the porcine pests who roam the mountainous region around the Games with fast-acting systems that shoot rays…” What? That should not come as a surprise, as the military has used 5G as “weaponized frequencies.”

New Research Shows Cell Phone Radiation Linked to DNA Damage Brain and Heart Tumours

A recent U.S government-funded study conducted by the NTP (National Toxicology Programme) a division of the NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) provides even more ammunition for the case that cell phone EMF (electromagnetic field) radiation is linked to cancer by causing brain tumours. However, contrary to popular belief, the new findings indicated that the harm was not brain cancer, per se, nor was this the primary cause. The study, one of the most extensive yet, found that above all, cell phone EMF radiation was linked to DNA damage and heart tumours.

As subjects, the study involved some 3000 rats and mice. Male rats were the most prone to developing heart tumours. DNA damage leading to cellular and heart tissue damage was found in both male and female rats, but not mice. However, both species suffered from tumours in the liver, pancreas and prostate during frequent and excessive long-term exposure to 2G, 3G radiation emitted from cell phones’ antennae (What About 4G and 5G??).

On finding the DNA damage in rats, the research challenges the preconceived idea that non-ionizing radiation from cell phones does not cause harm.

Interpreting these findings: How does this relate to humans?

In spite of the findings, John Bucher, Ph.D., the study’s lead researcher, said that they were unable to place much confidence in their research, because:

*The animals had the high exposure rates of 9 hours cell phone radiation per day for 2 years (rat’s average life expectancy). He basically said that it would therefore be difficult to extrapolate these high exposure rates and relate them to how the cell phone radiation would affect humans.

As a response, I consider this statement to be a serious oversight. These animal exposure rates are not that different to many humans, particularly when comparing the younger generation: Used by over 90% of the adult U.S.A population, many people are in constant proximity with their cell phone. Between the cell phone being in their pockets during the day, and then sleeping with it at night, some are in contact 24/7. Remember, whether it’s used or not, the cell phone, if kept on, constantly emits radiation.

World’s Largest Animal Study On Cell Tower Radiation Confirms Cancer Link

EHTRUST–Researchers with the renowned Ramazzini Institute (RI) in Italy announce that a large-scale lifetime study of lab animals exposed to environmental levels of cell tower radiation developed cancer. A $25 million study of much higher levels of cell phone radiofrequency (RF) radiation, from the US National Toxicology Program (NTP), has also reported finding the same unusual cancer called Schwannoma of the heart in male rats treated at the highest dose. In addition, the RI study of cell tower radiation also found increases in malignant brain (glial) tumors in female rats and precancerous conditions including Schwann cells hyperplasia in both male and female rats.

“Our findings of cancerous tumors in rats exposed to environmental levels of RF are consistent with and reinforce the results of the US NTP studies on cell phone radiation, as both reported increases in the same types of tumors of the brain and heart in Sprague-Dawley rats. Together, these studies provide sufficient evidence to call for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to re-evaluate and re-classify their conclusions regarding the carcinogenic potential of RFR in humans,” said Fiorella Belpoggi PhD, study author and RI Director of Research.

The Ramazzini study exposed 2448 Sprague-Dawley rats from prenatal life until their natural death to “environmental” cell tower radiation for 19 hours per day (1.8 GHz GSM radiofrequency radiation (RFR) of 5, 25 and 50 V/m). RI exposures mimicked base station emissions like those from cell tower antennas, and exposure levels were far less than those used in the NTP studies of cell phone radiation.

“All of the exposures used in the Ramazzini study were below the US FCC limits. These are permissible exposures according the FCC. In other words, a person can legally be exposed to this level of radiation. Yet cancers occurred in these animals at these legally permitted levels.

The first to experience the future of wireless technology, well before most humans, will be South Korea’s wild boars. That’s because 5G, the fifth-generation wireless network, is making its worldwide debut at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The technology will be used to ward off the porcine pests who roam the mountainous region around the Games with fast-acting systems that shoot rays, spew gases and emit tiger roars.

That’s just the start of 5G — South Korea’s attempt to showcase the first-in-the-world commercial use of the technology that’s not scheduled to roll out globally until 2020. At the Games, shuttle buses run with no humans at the wheel, and 360-degree images in real time show competing figure skaters as they glide around the ice.

Fifth-generation wireless networks are designed to be wicked fast, about 100 times faster than 4G. At 10 gigabits a second, 5G can send a full-length high-definition movie in seconds. It also paves the way for the “internet of things,” where devices from refrigerators to traffic lights to dog collars can talk to each other.

The tech industry is counting on the new capabilities: 5G will be important for developing artificial intelligence, drones, self-driving vehicles, robots and other machines that transmit massive data in real time, said Sandra Rivera, Intel Corp.’s California-based senior vice president overseeing network platforms. In other words, if computers talk to each other like children in 4G now, they’ll soon speak like grown-ups in 5G.

“It really is, we call it, the era of machines,” Rivera said in an interview. “Machines are coming, and the 5G is a big enabler with that true convergence of computing and communications.”

Wireless carriers are constructing cell towers a stronger, faster 5G network, but some experts warn that the updated service's health effects are unknown and potentially dangerous.

Today, there are 154,000 cell towers in the US, according to wireless communication association, CTIA. By 2026, it estimates another 800,000 will be needed to support 5G.

The network update will bring more Americans into closer proximity with milimeter waves, very short-wave radiation.

Wireless providers have begun installing 800,000 'small cell' towers to support the roll out of the new 5G cellular network, but some public health experts warn they may endanger humans

The new network is slated to support at 100 billion devices, connecting to the internet at anywhere between 10 and 100 times the speeds that information travels through the 4G network.

In order to facilitate these speeds, the new network communicates through millimeter waves (MMWs) rather than microwaves, as previous generations have.

The microwave networks are nearly saturated, hence the switch to the virtually untouched, lower frequency MMWs for 5G.

But smaller waves cannot travel as far, or through as many types of materials.

This means that there will need to be far more individual 'small cell towers' closer together - some have suggested they will be on every street corner in the US.

The 5G technology is too new to have been thoroughly tested and studied by many parties outside of cell service providers.

According to Dr Joel Moskowitz, a public health professor at the University of California, Berkeley, MMWs could pose a very real danger.

'The deployment of 5G, or fifth generation cellular technology, constitutes a massive experiment on the health of all species,' he told Daily Mail Online.

Because MMWs are weaker than microwaves, they are predominantly absorbed by the skin, meaning their distribution is quite focused there,

'Since skin contains capillaries and nerve endings, MMW bio-effects may be transmitted through molecular mechanisms by the skin or through the nervous system,' Dr Moskowitz writes on his blog.

He also told Daily Mail Online that he's concerned that '5G will use high-band frequencies, or millimeter waves, that may affect the eyes, the testes, the skin, the peripheral nervous system, and sweat glands.'

'Millimeter waves can also make some pathogens resistant to antibiotics,' he added.

Dr Moskowitz is not alone in aprehensions.

The International Society of Doctors for the Environment, its subsidiaries in 27 countries and more than 200 doctors and scientists are all calling for a stop to be put to the roll out of 5G, 'due to concern that 5G radio frequency radiation will have adverse health effects,' Dr Moskowitz says.

So far, their warnings have gone unheeded.

Verizon began rolling out their 5G small cell towers in 11 cities 2017, and AT&T started installing the new generation of service in Waco and Dallas, Texas, as well as in Atlanta, Georgia this year.

5G is the term used to describe the next-generation of mobile networks beyond the 4G LTE mobile networks commonly used today. 5G is intended to be the technology that allows the Internet of Things (IOT) to exist and tie all internet connected devices together.
Currently there is no standard for 5G networks in place and it will be a combination of a variety of frequencies and modulations. Industry is developing exactly what 5G will be as the standard ha not been set yet. It is assumed that 5G networks will not become commercially available until 2020 but several cities are rolling out 5G as test areas now.

Published peer reviewed science already indicates that the current wireless technologies of 2G, 3G and 4G – in use today with our cell phones, computers and wearable tech – creates radiofrequency exposures which poses a serious health risk to humans, animals and the environment. Scientists are cautioning that before rolling out 5G, research on human health effects urgently needs to be done first to ensure the public and environment are protected.

However, instead of prudent public health measures to ensure the public’s safety, governments such as the United States are quickly rolling out 5G networks in neighborhoods and are enacting various state and federal regulations to “streamline” and fasttrack the rollout. These regulations will end the ability of communities to halt and be a part of the decision making process in this massive 5G infrastructure buildout.

THOUSANDS OF MINI CELL TOWERS TO BE BUILT IN FRONT OF HOMES

5G will require the buildout of literally hundreds of thousands of new wireless antennas in neighborhoods, cities and towns. A cellular small cell or other transmitter will be placed every two to ten homes according to estimates. The purpose of this massive infrastructure build out of small cells, distributed antennae systems and microcells is to increase range and capacity in populated urban areas and prepare for the future 5G rollout. 5G frequencies will utilize higher frequencies that do not travel as far as the lower frequencies.

US state and federal governments are moving forth regulations which would make the right of way in front of homes as available sites for 5G transmitters – without consent of the property owners. In response, communities are protesting en mass as they do not want these transmitters built in front of their homes and communities want to be able to regulate the placement on right of ways. Some municipalities are taking the case to the courts with litigation.

5G WILL USE HIGHER ELECTROMAGNETIC FREQUENCIES

5G will utilize multiple frequencies from those currently in use for cell phones and wireless to higher millimeter frequencies.

Today’s cellular and Wi-Fi networks rely on microwaves – a type of electromagnetic radiation utilizing frequencies up to 6 gigahertz (GHz) in order to wirelessly transmit voice or data. However, 5G applications will require unlocking of new spectrum bands in higher frequency ranges above 6 GHz to 100 GHz and beyond, utilizing submillimeter and millimeter waves – to allow ultra-high rates of data to be transmitted in the same amount of time as compared with previous deployments of microwave radiation.

MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER WAVES ARE BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE

Current investigations of wireless frequencies in the millimeter and submillimeter range confirm that these waves interact directly with human skin, specifically the sweat glands. Dr. Ben-Ishai of the Department of Physics, Hebrew University, Israel recently detailed how human sweat ducts act like an array of helical antennas when exposed to these wavelengths.

MECHANISM OF ACTION IS PROVEN

Research already indicates serious adverse effects from the wireless modalities in use today. Research studies from the Dielectric Spectroscopy Laboratory of the Department of Applied Physics, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, headed by Dr. Yuri Feldman, indicate that 5Gs millimeter and submillimeter waves will uniquely interact with human skin and lead to preferential layer absorption. The number of sweat ducts within human skin varies from two million to four million. Replicated peer research of these biological effects in laboratory research has been conducted internationally and scientists consider this mechanism of action well proven (See documentation further down on this webpage).

5G FREQUENCIES ARE USED IN WEAPONS

For years, the U.S., Russian and Chinese defense agencies have been developing weapons that rely on the capability of this electromagnetic frequency range to induce unpleasant burning sensations on the skin as a form of crowd control. Millimeter waves are utilized by the U.S. Army in crowd dispersal guns called Active Denial Systems. Dr. Paul Ben-Ishai pointed to research that was commissioned by the U.S. Army to find out why people ran away when the beam touched them. “If you are unlucky enough to be standing there when it hits you, you will feel like your body is on fire.” The U.S. Department of Defense explains how “The sensation dissipates when the target moves out of the beam. The sensation is intense enough to cause a nearly instantaneous reflex action of the target to flee the beam.”

HUMAN SKIN WILL BE CLASSIFIED AS AN EXTREMITY ALLOWING HIGHER EXPOSURES

Our skin is our largest organ. Dariusz Leszczynski, PhD, Chief Editor of Radiation and Health has stated that the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection usually referred to as ICNIRP – is developing recommendations for public exposure limits of these higher frequencies is planning to classify all the skin in the human body as belonging to the limbs rather than to the head or torso. Leszczynski cautioned that, “If you classify skin as limbs – no matter where the skin is – you are permitted to expose it more than otherwise.”

We assume that in terms of US exposure limits this means that the skin will be classified as “an extremity”. Extremities are allowed to be exposed to much higher radiation levels than the brain, torso, legs and arms. In the USA extremities -in regards to wireless radiation- are specifically wrists and hands, ankles and feet and the ear.

5G DEPLOYMENT WITHOUT HEALTH EFFECT EVALUATION

5G is being developed and implemented without adequate evaluation of the effect of this technology on human health after long term exposure to these frequencies. Peer reviewed research studies have found adverse effects from the electromagnetic frequencies currently in use and that will be in use for this new technology.

“There is an urgent need to evaluate 5G health effects now before millions are exposed. We need to know if 5G increases the risk of skin diseases such as melanoma or other skin cancers,” stated Ron Melnick, the National Institutes of Health scientist, now retired, who led the design of the National Toxicology Program study on cell phone radiofrequency radiation.

5G Networks Future
In Dr. Cindy Russell’s A 5G Wireless Future: Will it give us a smart nation or contribute to an unhealthy one (Text PDF), published in the the Santa Clara Medical Association, Russell states that “3G, 4G, 5G or a combination of zapping frequencies giving us immersive connection and entertainment but at a potentially steep price.” Russell details the scientific documentation on 5G’s frequencies which include arrhythmias, heart rate variability, bacterial affects, antibiotic resistance, immune system affects, chromatin affects, teratogenic effects, altered gene expression and cataracts.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH

Do not proceed to roll out 5G technologies pending pre-market studies on health effects.
Reevaluate safety standards based on long term as well as short term studies on biological effects.
Rescind a portion of Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which preempts state and local government regulation for the placement, construction, and modification of personal wireless service facilities on the basis of the environmental effects so that health and environmental issues can be addressed.
Rescind portions of The Spectrum Act which was passed in 2012 as part of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act, which strips the ability city officials and local governments to regulate cellular communications equipment, provides no public notification or opportunity for public input and may potentially result in environmental impacts.
Create an independent multidisciplinary scientific agency tasked with developing appropriate safety regulations, premarket testing and research needs in a transparent environment with public input.
Label pertinent EMF information on devices along with appropriate precautionary warnings.

Experimentally we showed that the reflectance of the human skin in the sub-THz region depends on the intensity of perspiration, i.e. sweat duct’s conductivity, and correlates with levels of human stress (physical, mental and emotional). Later on, we detected circular dichroism in the reflectance from the skin, a signature of the axial mode of a helical antenna. The full ramifications of what these findings represent in the human condition are still unclear. We also revealed correlation of electrocardiography (ECG) parameters to the sub-THz reflection coefficient of human skin. In a recent work, we developed a unique simulation tool of human skin, taking into account the skin multi-layer structure together with the helical segment of the sweat duct embedded in it. The presence of the sweat duct led to a high specific absorption rate (SAR) of the skin in extremely high frequency band. In this paper, we summarize the physical evidence for this phenomenon and consider its implication for the future exploitation of the electromagnetic spectrum by wireless communication. Starting from July 2016 the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted new rules for wireless broadband operations above 24 GHz (5 G). This trend of exploitation is predicted to expand to higher frequencies in the sub-THz region. One must consider the implications of human immersion in the electromagnetic noise, caused by devices working at the very same frequencies as those, to which the sweat duct (as a helical antenna) is most attuned. We are raising a warning flag against the unrestricted use of sub-THz technologies for communication, before the possible consequences for public health are explored.

Our results show that 5G downlink RF fields generate significantly higher power density (PD) and specific absorption rate (SAR) than a current cellular system. This paper also shows that SAR should also be taken into account for determining human RF exposure in the mmW downlink.

A judge has refused to 'gag' an-anti 5G lighting campaigner, ruling the issue SHOULD be debated.

Mark Steele claims 5G kills babies and causes cancer, and believes it's secretly being used in Gateshead.

The council denies this and applied for an injunction to limit what the 57-year-old could even post online about 5G.

But Recorder Nolan QC said he refused to 'gag' him, adding: "The public have a right to know."

Outside the court, protesters - some dressed like World War One soldiers - used microphones to air their 5G concerns.

Inside the court, a packed gallery - including a small child - heard claims Steele had harassed an array of council staff and councillors.

It heard Steele accused one worker of "crimes against humanity" for their involvement with the lights.

One was branded a "murdering c***" while another, repairing a streetlight, was called a "baby killer", the court was told.

"I said do you know [the lights] are capable of killing babies," Steele recalled in his evidence on Thursday.

He claims that worker, like several of the alleged harassment victims, "laughed" at him.

And speaking after the Newcastle County Court hearing, Steele said he's aware he's been ridiculed at times for his beliefs.

These, the court heard, include claims 5G is linked to birds and bees dying across Gateshead.

"I don't blame anyone for laughing," he told ChronicleLive.

"I'm an expert in this particular field and I find it unbelievable and I don't expect anyone not find it nonsensical.

"But this is happening."

But now Steele has offered an olive branch to Gateshead Council, urging bosses to sit down and discuss the issue with him.

WHAT IS 5G?
The council has strenuously denied secretly using 5G - most notably in an infamous viral Facebook post.

And despite not being 'gagged', the judge did impose three conditions on Steele as part of a watered down two-year injunction.

The conditions prohibit him from breaking harassment laws and limit who he can film.

The interim order imposed in July was much tougher - restricting what he could post on Facebook.

Imposing the new order, Recorder Nolan warned him: "I'm not going to give you a gagging order - I'm just going to ask you to behave yourself."

During the hearing, Steel had denied the council's claim his behaviour had gone over the top.

Outside, he said he had "acted proportionally".

"The children in my locality are bleeding from the nose - they are suffering from this technology," claimed the Percy Gardens inventor.

In court, he claimed a series of boffins - including some at the prestigious Harvard University - now support his 5G fears.

Gateshead Council previously dismissed them as "entirely false".

"We don’t know how these conspiracy stories start, but we are happy to report that this is exactly what these are," they wrote in a Facebook statement in April.

"These tales are completely untrue and you should ignore them.

“Please be assured that there is no scientific basis or credible evidence for any of these scare stories about street lights causing cancer and other illnesses.”

Science or not, Recorder Nolan said Steele had put a "tremendous amount of research" into the 5G debate and that his voice should be allowed to be heard.

"It is an area which I can accept there is an area of public concern," he added.

"And the public have a right to know - this is a free country."

A Gateshead Council spokesperson said: “We are pleased that the court agreed with the council that Mr Steele’s threatening and intimidating behaviour towards our staff and councillors was unacceptable and made an injunction order preventing him from continuing this behaviour for two years.

"Any breach of this order could result in Mr Steele’s arrest and imprisonment.

“This injunction was always about the safety of our staff and councillors, which we take very seriously, and not about preventing Mr Steele engaging in lawful activity.”

Since 2017, 241 scientists and doctors from the U.S. and around the world have demanded a moratorium on the installation of 5G wireless technology due to biological and environmental risks.

Activist Post already reported about the 5G court case that was won in Gateshead, England after 5G was installed in street lamps and people became sick. Scientist, Mark Steele, was part of the movement to get the 5G removed and Gateshead council members weren’t at all happy about that.

Mark Steele, a 5G campaigner, has been highlighting the dangers of a secret 5G rollout by Gateshead Council where residents are complaining of increased illness and Cancer in the affected area. There’s enough evidence to conclude the new smart 5G arrays on the top of new LED lampposts emit Class 1 Radiation frequencies and should be treated as a danger to the Public. Gateshead Council ignorantly rebutted clear evidence and created false allegations on social media posts and printed leaflets stating that Mark Steele is spreading Pseudo Science and that the arrays are not dangerous or 5G:

They misused Police Powers to gag Mark Steele and yesterday he left a free man and Gateshead Council to fork out £11k of taxpayers money to cover the court cost amounting to woeful ignorance. In Court, none of the Council Officers could explain what 5G is; and their leading Government expert refused to attend the Court hearing.

In conclusion, the Judge refused to gag Mark, stating: “The public have a right to know.”

The Judge declared Mark Steele as a credible expert and engineer on EMF and GSM technologies, which proves Gateshead Council are liable for corruption, misleading the public, making people ill and attempting to discredit Mark Steele and all others such as Smombie Gate fighting 5G rollouts.

Regardless of all of this, Mark now seems to be facing jail time for continuing to warn the public about 5G as well as expecting Gateshead council members to answer questions. So much for democracy…

Marks explanatory video below. It would be useful if the independent media could get hold of the scientific evidence that mark speaks of which he says he has handed to various authorities because if he is gagged it will fall to others to take up the baton and run with it

Apart from its tremendous commercial benefits, 5G – the fifth generation of mobile communication – is revolutionising military and security technology, which is partly why it has become a focal point in the United States’ efforts to contain China’s rise as a tech power and its allegations against Chinese companies.

The future landscape of warfare and cybersecurity could be fundamentally changed by 5G. But experts say 5G is more susceptible to hacking than previous networks, at a time of rising security concerns and US-China tensions on various interconnected fronts that include trade, influence in the Asia-Pacific region and technological rivalry.

These tensions provide the backdrop to controversy surrounding Huawei, the world’s largest telecoms equipment supplier.

Long before the Chinese company was indicted in the US this week on multiple charges including stealing trade secrets and violating US sanctions – charges it denies – US intelligence voiced concerns that Huawei’s telecommunications equipment could contain “back doors” for Chinese espionage.

Huawei has repeatedly denied these allegations, but the controversies have underlined 5G’s growing importance and stepped up the technological arms race between China and the US.

To most people, the next-generation networks, which will be at least 20 times faster than the most advanced networks today, may just mean faster downloads of movies or smoother streaming. But they have much bigger potential than that.


Whereas existing networks connect people to people, the next generation will connect a vast network of sensors, robots and autonomous vehicles through sophisticated artificial intelligence.

The so-called internet of things will allow objects to “communicate” with each other by exchanging vast volumes of data in real time, and without human intervention.

Autonomous factories, long-distance surgery or robots preparing your breakfast – things that previously existed only in science fiction – will be made possible.

Meanwhile, though, it is being identified by many military experts as the cornerstone of future military technology.

Imagine a group of skirmishers in a jungle. They are moving forward speedily with a distance from one another of a few hundred metres. Each of them wears a wristwatch that displays fellow members’ positions. This is not satellite positioning, because reception in the tropical forest is unstable; it’s machine-to-machine communication.

Suddenly one soldier, ambushed by an enemy combatant, is shot and loses consciousness. His smart wearable device detects his condition via sensors, immediately tightens a belt around his wounded thigh, injects an adrenaline shot and sends an emergency alert to the field hospital as well as the entire team.

Having received the signal on their wristwatches, the team switch to a coordinated combat formation and encircle the enemy. An ambulance helicopter arrives to evacuate the injured soldier while auto-driven armoured vehicles come to reinforce – guided by devices on each soldier and antenna arrays nearby.

Or, imagine a street battle with a group of terrorists in a city. There is a power blackout and terrorists hide in an empty office building. A counterterrorism technician hacks into the building’s audio control system and collects high-sensitivity soundwaves using the microphones on surveillance cameras – the system is still running thanks to the devices’ low power consumption and long endurance.

China says it will fast-track 5G commercial licences amid push back on Huawei’s overseas expansion

After the acoustic data is sent back, artificial intelligence (AI) analysis determines the locations of the terrorists. A drone is called from nearby, enters through a window and fires a mini-gun at them.

These are not movie plots, but technologies already or about to be developed, as the internet of things – built on 5G and AI technologies – reshapes warfare.

“The 5G network and the internet of things enlarge and deepen the cognition of situations in the battlefield by several orders of magnitude and produce gigantic amounts of data, requiring AI to analyse and even issue commands,” said Dr Clark Shu, an AI and telecommunication researcher at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.


With the ability to carry much more data, much lower network latency (network response time) and energy consumption and much better stability than the previous generation of technologies, 5G is expected to transform digital communication.

Using 5G, data can be transmitted at up to 10 gigabytes per second, much faster than using a 4G network, and the latency is reduced to under a millisecond, or 1 per cent that of 4G.

Such features enhance connectivity in remote locations, connect sensors and robots, and will enable vehicles, traffic control, factories and construction to become more autonomous. In particular, 5G will enhance the connectivity of the internet of things (IoT).

“Internet of things involves close-range telecommunications technology to connect and exchange information between two devices, and 5G is the fastest data transmission method to realise it,” said Zhou Zhaoxiong, a senior engineer at China Mobile IoT Company, a subsidiary of China Mobile.

Military equipment embedded with communication devices can also form the internet of things, he added. The communication can take place from device to device, without satellites or early-warning planes, saving those limited resources for other uses and significantly lowering the cost of a military operation, according to a 2017 report in China Defence News, a mouthpiece of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

China has been one of the powerhouses in research and development of 5G technologies. Its telecoms operators have said they will begin to introduce commercial 5G networks from 2020, although Zhou said this would involve only regional pilot schemes because 5G devices are still quite expensive for mass commercial use.

US charges Chinese telecoms giant Huawei with conspiracy, money laundering

Last week, Huawei launched a chip that it claimed to be the world’s most powerful 5G modem.

Then came the US Justice Department’s 13-count indictment on Monday against the Chinese company, its affiliates and its chief financial officer Sabrina Meng Wanzhou, following the arrest of Meng in Canada on December 1 at the US’ request.


But questions over the 5G technology made by Huawei and other Chinese firms date back further. In 2012, the US House Intelligence Committee released a report alleging Chinese telecoms equipment makers posed a threat to national security because of their relationship with the Chinese government. China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law asks Chinese companies to cooperate for national intelligence purposes when necessary.

The US has lobbied its allies to ban Huawei from building their next generation of mobile phone networks, and countries such as Britain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Canada have either banned Huawei or are reviewing whether to do so.

Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei – Meng’s father – is a former PLA engineer, which has further fuelled questions in the West about Huawei’s ties to the Chinese army and government.

Huawei’s troubles grow in Europe as more countries follow the US in shunning it over security concerns

But Huawei executives have asked repeatedly, in vain, for evidence of “back doors” in its equipment. BIS, the German internet security watchdog, inspected Huawei labs in Germany and found no evidence, and The New York Times last week quoted American officials as saying that the case against the company had “no smoking gun – just a heightened concern about the firm’s rising technological dominance”.


Moves by the US and its allies to block Huawei from 5G networks on national security grounds were last month described as a “concerted strategy” by Kevin Allison, of US-headquartered political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, talking to US broadcaster CNBC.

A report last year to the White House by the US’ National Security Council called for action and strategy to “protect US technology leadership” and prevent China challenging US dominance in tech.

Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military commentator, said China has commissioned research institutions and state-owned companies, not Huawei, for its military 5G development.

“For example, branches of the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, which makes military radars and other electronic systems, are focused in this area,” said Song.

The US, too, has been investing in military use of 5G, while prototype 5G networks for civilian use have been launched in some cities.

In a recent interview with military technologies publication C4ISRNET, Brent Upson, a director at American aerospace and security company Lockheed Martin, predicted machine-to-machine communication, using information from several sources to form a unified picture of battlespaces, and AI-assisted decision-making would be among the trends in 2019.

US indictments against Huawei a step towards splitting the world’s telecoms industry in two

Todd Wieser, chief technology officer of the US Air Force’s Special Operations Command, has said 5G tech will enhance his forces’ mobile communications and geospatial functionality.

But commercial 5G networks are regarded by the US government as easy prey for foreign intelligence agents and hackers, and such concerns are heightened where a military network is subject to hacking and intrusion attempts by adversaries.

“The biggest disadvantage of a 5G network in the battlefield is the vulnerability to electromagnetic interference – and hacking and intrusion,” said Shu.

“The significant increase in sensors and data nodes means an increase of exposure, and an increased risk of being attacked.”

Like many urban Chinese consumers, Shenzhen civil servant Gao Jian has had a long-held belief that the quality of domestic smartphone brands paled in comparison with foreign brands, especially Apple.

But in December, Gao joined the growing number of mainland consumers who have made the switch from Apple’s iPhone to a premium Android smartphone from a major Chinese brand. He bought a Mate 20 Pro, the flagship model from the country’s largest smartphone supplier Huawei Technologies.

“Its design and cameras are better than what I expected,” Gao said. “Also, iPhones have become increasingly unaffordable.”


Have we reached the peak of smartphone production?

His experience reflects the broader success of the Chinese mobile phone industry in smashing people’s perception that domestic suppliers are only good for inexpensive, low-quality products.

That stereotype has beset many Chinese brands in the home appliances, consumer electronics, personal computer, car and mobile phone markets, where products from more established brands in the US, Japan or Europe were preferred by mainland consumers for many years.


But brands like Haier Group Corp, Lenovo Group and, more recently, Huawei, have expanded their operations, increased research and development, and made advanced products to change that impression around the world.

China is now home to some of the most successful smartphone brands, which rival the likes of Samsung Electronics, Apple and LG Electronics.

China’s smartphone shipments fall to pre-2014 level as economic slowdown bites

Shenzhen-based Huawei, the top global supplier of telecommunications network equipment, was ranked the world’s second biggest smartphone vendor – behind Samsung and ahead of Apple – for the second consecutive quarter in the three months ended September 30, according to research firm IDC. Xiaomi Corp and Oppo took the No 4 and 5 spots in the same quarter.

“Clearly, not all [Chinese smartphone brands] have been equally successful,” said Kiranjeet Kaur, a senior research manager at IDC Asia-Pacific. “But most of those that are doing well in the domestic market have had good fortune in the global market, too.”

2019 expected to bring some big changes for China tech

Kaur said other major Chinese smartphone players include Vivo, OnePlus, Alcatel brand licence-holder TCL Corp, ZTE Corp and Lenovo Group, which bought Motorola Mobility in 2014 and now sells a line of handsets under the Moto brand.

Demand for Chinese-brand mobile phones doubled each year between 2010 and 2012 during the period when 3G mobile services were being rolled out across the country, but gradually slowed down from 2013 ahead of the deployment of faster 4G services by the mainland’s three mobile network operators.

The emergence of Chinese smartphone brands on the global stage has mirrored the rising competitiveness of the country’s telecoms network equipment suppliers, which have won market share with value-for-money offerings as well as on heavy investments in research and development.

The gains have also sparked increasing pushback by the US, which is persuading its allies to boycott Chinese telecoms gear suppliers such as Huawei on grounds of national security.

Huawei launches new laptop for US amid security scrutiny

With the world’s biggest internet population and smartphone market, China had as many as 300 domestic mobile phone companies about three years ago. Cutthroat competition reduced that number to about 200 last year, as Chinese consumers bought fewer smartphones and the economy grew at a slower pace.

The larger, deep-pocketed Chinese smartphone suppliers have won a big chunk of the domestic market through aggressive promotions, advanced designs and features, and offering a wide array of models in a range of prices to entice both younger and affluent buyers. It also represents their standard operating procedure overseas, particularly in India and countries in Southeast Asia.

Unlike the smaller smartphone brands in China, Kaur said none of the major players competed in the very low-end of the market because they focused on building their brands and offered sophisticated features at affordable prices – a strategy that worked well against global brands like Apple and Samsung.

Xiaomi blazed a successful trail in China by exclusively selling online low-cost Android smartphones with design and technical specifications comparable to high-end models.

The Beijing-based company also expanded its product line to include mobile phone accessories, tablets, earphones, smart television sets and laptop computers.

Huawei, with operations in about 170 countries and territories, achieved broad distribution on the back of its role as a telecoms gear supplier to many mobile network operators around the world.

Samsung dials up India with budget phone range

In 2016, Huawei collaborated with Germany’s Leica Camera to help it address the premium smartphone segment and further differentiate the firm from other Android device makers.

For privately held BBK Electronics Corp, headquartered in the southern coastal city of Dongguan in Guangdong province, a multiple brand strategy has allowed it to cover nearly all smartphone segments in China and overseas. The company is behind Oppo and Vivo as well as newer brands OnePlus and Realme.

OnePlus is already a global top five supplier of high-end Android handsets, according to Counterpoint Research. Realme, which started as an India-focused vendor of affordable smartphones, now plans to expand its operations across Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe.

Xiaomi to put more focus on domestic market

Samsung has been hit hard by that competition. In December, the South Korean tech giant said it was shutting down its smartphone manufacturing plant in the northern city of Tianjin amid slumping sales in the country and rising labour costs. Samsung was No 1 in China with 20 per cent of the market in 2013, but fell to less than 1 per cent last year.

Huawei, Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi were the top-selling smartphone brands in China in the quarter ended September 30, according to Counterpoint. Apple ranked fifth in the same period.

Earlier this month, Apple chief executive Tim Cook blamed a weak Chinese economy for a downgrade in the company’s revenue guidance for the quarter ended December 31.

Apple’s earnings to feel the impact of poor iPhone sales in China

Market experts, however, said Cook may have glossed over strategic missteps made by Apple on the mainland, where its latest iPhones are the most expensive and compete against vastly improved Chinese handsets that cost less.

“The new iPhones are certainly not as popular as four years ago,” said Wang Dan, who runs a mobile phone store in the Huaqiangbei electronics marketplace in Shenzhen. “A lot of Chinese customers cannot afford them, and there are now more choices available.”

Wang said Apple typically reduced the price of new iPhones after a certain period in the market. Four smartphone wholesalers in the area estimated that iPhone prices there have been cut between 200 yuan (US$29) and 500 yuan in the past few days.

Zaker Li, a Shenzhen-based senior industry analyst with IHS Markit, credited better smartphone design and performance by Chinese brands for attracting users away from foreign brands.

Huawei’s flagship Mate 20 Pro, for example, received an overall review score of 9 out of 10 on tech news site CNET. That matched well against Samsung’s Note 9, with a similar score, and the iPhone XS, with an 8.8 mark.


Major Chinese smartphone brands look to ratchet up the delivery of smartphones based on 5G technology in 2019, as mobile network operators around the world step up testing and development of next-generation wireless infrastructure. Huawei, ZTE and OnePlus have joined Samsung among the first big brands to announce plans to release 5G handsets in 2019.

Still, a prolonged US-China trade dispute could spoil those initiatives, especially if Washington restricts the export of American-made software and hardware components.

That would threaten to slow down China’s expansion in everything from smartphones, wireless network equipment and self-driving cars to semiconductors, e-commerce and financial technology.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder and chief executive, recently suggested a way to ride out that trade conflict. He said Xiaomi will sharpen its focus on Europe, where main Chinese rival Huawei is growing, and push high-end Android devices there.

“If we steadily improve our quality and design, consumers will be willing to pay more to buy our products,” Lei said.

China has pledged to fast-track the issuance of 5G commercial licences as part of an effort to boost domestic use of the next-generation mobile technology amid a US-led push back on the overseas ambitions of telecommunications equipment giant Huawei Technologies.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a notice published on its website on Tuesday that it will speed up the granting of 5G commercial licences to upgrade so-called information consumption in the country.

The state planner also said it would promote high-quality video and support the launch of 4K television channels across China to enrich content as well as subsidise super high-definition TV sets, virtual reality and augmented reality devices in certain regions.


The move is part of a broader effort to boost domestic consumption amid slowing economic growth. It also comes at a time when Huawei, which leads China’s bid to become the leading supplier of advanced telecoms equipment to the world’s mobile carriers, faces growing pressure from the US, where some politicians consider it an arm of the Chinese government.

The US filed charges on Monday against Huawei, contending that the Chinese smartphone and network gear maker had stolen trade secrets from a telecoms rival and violated US sanctions against doing business with Iran.

There is also heightened scrutiny on Huawei in other countries – including Britain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Canada – where their governments have either banned or are reviewing whether to allow Huawei equipment for their telecoms networks.

NDRC did not give a specific timetable on when China will grant commercial 5G licences. Earlier this year, authorities said they would issue temporary 5G licenses to promote the application and construction of the next-generation mobile technology to push forward the development of new 5G hardware, including smartphones and wearable devices.


The central government also awarded China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom with 5G spectrum licences at the end of 2018, enabling them to conduct final trials for the new mobile system before its wider commercial roll-out set for 2020.

Wen Ku, a senior information and communications officer at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday that the 5G networks are ready for “pre-commercialisation” after the completion of the latest tests.

Wen expects mature 5G devices to roll out by mid-2019 because smartphone makers and chip suppliers have been making rapid progress in developing 5G-based devices.

According to data from the Internet Society of China, the information consumption market in China, which includes all services and products that rely on an internet connection – including connected cars, wearable devices and service robots – was worth 5 trillion yuan (US$741 billion) in 2018, accounting for about 6 per cent of the country’s GDP.
