A `VILE and immoral' man who made millions of pounds from a string of brothels has today been jailed for three years and eight months.

Ian Barnett, 56, of Ingledene Avenue, Broughton Park, had earlier pleaded guilty to keeping brothels at Shudehill in Manchester, Stockport Road, Levenshulme, and Cheetham Hill between 2004 and 2005; keeping a brothel called Angels in Altrincham in 2005; controlling prostitution in relation to a woman who had been trafficked into this country from Lithuania and conspiracy to control a string of brothels between 2005 and the beginning of 2007.

The court heard Barnett had earlier been given an eight month sentence suspended for two years in October 2005 for living off immoral earnings, but that after making attempts to disguise his involvement by transferring leases into other people's names, he had continued to make more than £2,500 a week from them.

Financial investigators who looked at accounts from the brothels over a two month period estimated they had a turn-over of £2.5 million in the space of two-and-a-half years.

Sentencing him at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Anthony Ensor said: "Your persistent offending makes this case one of considerable gravity."

He added: "I am satisfied that you are an avaricious and callous individual. It was greed which motivated you to continue to run the business after you were initially arrested and sentenced as amply demonstrated by your keen monitoring of the trade of these brothels.

Vile trade

"Further, the discipline you exercised over these women displays your uncaring and heartless approach. This was a vile trade undertaken by an evil and immoral man."

He said that although there was no evidence Barnett had been involved in the trafficking of a Lithuanian woman employed in one of his brothels, the premises had "afforded people traffickers the opportunity to place those foreign women to work."

Balding, bespectacled Ian Barnett was arrested after police were alerted to the trafficked Lithuanian woman working in one of his four Manchester brothels.

The 19-year-old woman, who came “from a very humble background”, was brought to the UK by an Albanian gang under the pretext that she could earn money as a cleaner.

“Instead she found herself treated as a commodity,” prosecutor Tina Landale told Manchester Crown Court today.

The woman, who spoke no English, was forced to work at Dolly Mixtures at Shude Hill, Manchester.

Ms Landale said: “She had to sit with other prostitutes on the couch until a customer chose her.

“She was used as a prostitute on 12 occasions while at the brothel.

“Ian Barnett took her photograph without her knowledge or her consent and he put her picture on the internet to advertise her as a prostitute without her consent.”

The woman, who cannot be named, spent three days at the brothel before being rescued by police, following a tip-off, on July 31, 2005.

Ms Landale said she had alerted two Russian-speaking Polish men to her plight.

Frightened

She said a Czech prostitute who met the Lithuanian girl described her as “frightened”.

Ms Landale said there were 12 other foreign girls who were suspected of being trafficked but this was never proved.

Barnett was never charged with people trafficking offences.

He delegated the day to day running of his sex empire to three female managers.

Ms Landale said Barnett was warned four times that he would be prosecuted if he carried on running brothels.

She said: “Effectively Ian Barnett turned a blind eye, took a Nelsonian approach, to the trafficking of women.

“He is not charged with trafficking any women but he provided premises where traffickers were able to take women.” [/code]

A TEACHING assistant has been convicted of laundering thousands of pounds made by her husband's string of brothels. Michele Barnett, 55, a £7,000-a-year special needs teaching assistant at King David School in Prestwich, was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years.

A TEACHING assistant has been convicted of laundering thousands of pounds made by her husband's string of brothels.

Michele Barnett, 55, a £7,000-a-year special needs teaching assistant at King David School in Prestwich, was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years.

Manchester Crown Court heard mortgage payments on the mum's lavish five-bedroom home in Ingledene Avenue, Broughton Park, were made with cash from the brothels of her husband Ian Barnett.

Ian Barnett, 56, a former surveyor, was last month jailed for three years and eight months after pleading guilty to keeping brothels with a turnover of more than £2.5m in Manchester centre, Levenshulme and Cheetham Hill.

He also pleaded guilty to controlling the prostitution of a woman who was trafficked into this country from Lithuania by an Albanian crime gang who promised her a job as a cleaner.

Mrs Barnett was sentenced after a jury found her guilty of 10 counts of money laundering equating to just over £9,000. She was cleared of a further 14 counts.

Tina Landale, prosecuting, said Mrs Barnett must have known where her husband's money came from after press cuttings were found at their home along with envelopes full of money from the brothels with her husband's name on.

Photographs of some of the women Ian Barnett had taken to post on a website advertising the brothels had also been taken in the lounge and piano room of the family home.

Police found emails between Mr Barnett and his daughter Emma, talking about his `whores'.

The couple, married for more than 25 years, had a Rolls-Royce and a Jaguar with personal plates, went on exotic holidays and lived a `wealthy lifestyle'.

Miss Landale said: "The brothels sold sex videos to the customers and when the police searched the house they discovered a TV continuously recording sex films and 3,000 sex videos in the house.

"Michele Barnett could not have failed to notice the production of these tapes and the prosecution say she must have known what they were for."

After the case, Mrs Barnett said she had thought her husband had sold his business in 2005 and that the couple were now `estranged'.

She said her husband made the mortgage payments from his bank account and she did not know the money was illegal.

Joshua Rowe, head of governors at King David School, said Mrs Barnett who was still employed by the school, was `totally committed to the well being of the children'.

Her future at the school would have to be discussed with police and education authority.

Brothel owner's £4.2m appeal win

Ian Barnett: living on benefits
Ian Barnett: living on benefits
A Jewish man convicted of making millions running a string of brothels in Manchester has had his proceeds-of-crime court confiscation order reduced by £4.2 million after winning an appeal that could affect future prosecutions of people operating in the sex industry.

Three judges at the Court of Appeal in London upheld a claim that a Manchester judge had wrongly ordered the confiscation of £4.2 million of brothel earnings made by Ian Barnett, 60, from Prestwich. Mr Barnett had already forfeited £21,000 in the first of his two convictions for operating brothels, preventing a judge from confiscating immoral earnings from the previous six years, under a legal technicality. He is now liable for £873,010 of immoral gains made after 2005.

The court heard that Mr Barnett's prostitution businesses, "whilst not condoned by the local police, did receive a measure of tacit approval over a period of time." Mr Barnett claimed that Greater Manchester Police gave a kind of legal permission to run his brothels in return for co-operation and assurances that his businesses did not involve drugs or under-age girls.

It followed Home Office guidance issued at the time that advised police forces to focus on "trying to ensure that prostitution took 'the least unacceptable form'", the judges notes.

The appeal ruling last Wednesday will not materially affect how much Mr Barnett will pay, after the court upheld the Manchester court's actual fine of just £4,000 of the £5 million, because financial investigators found Mr Barnett has subsequently become impoverished and is living on benefits.

However, the judges said the case "could not exclude the possibility that it may become relevant in future proceedings." Mr Barnett, who was given a three-year prison sentence in 2008 and has admitted to running brothels, is involved in a number of legal appeals aimed at clearing the names of brothel owners who claim they were misled by the police and the Home Office into believing they would not be prosecuted for their prostitution activities.
